A SECOND PATIENT

By Rachel Mary

In the OB/GYN field, does the physician have one or two patients?

This topic is quite often a divided answer among OB/GYNs. Many times, an OB/GYN believes that the woman is strictly her patient, but there are some OB/GYNs that do believe and acknowledge that there are (at least) two patients for whom to provide care.

This question depends on how a doctor views the unborn child. I believe there are 3 categories of OB/GYNs.

• The first category is the pro-abortion OB/GYN who typically disregards the science of the humanity of the child and refers to or commit abortions.

• The second category is the 100% pro-life OB/GYN. This is a physician who will always fight for life, never recommending or committing an abortion but provides resources and alternatives (e.g. pregnancy help center, maternity homes, adoption agencies, and one who fights for babies who have health conditions or diagnoses in the womb and loves these babies and fights for them and does not recommend or suggest or consider it “ethical” to suggest abortion.

• The third category is the OB/GYN who claims to be pro-life but has unknowingly bought into the lies of pro-abortion ACOG (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists). This doctor tells the mother that the decision is simply hers because it’s “her body,” or ” the pregnancy is incompatible with life” or that the “mother will die unless she aborts” etc. This is contradictory to the point of medicine which is to care for the vulnerable not kill the vulnerable. OBGYNs should walk with a precious single mother who has an “unplanned” pregnancy and to walk with the parents and their baby/babies in utero whom they find out have a health condition in the womb.

With these three categories, it’s easy to see why some OBGYNs refuse to believe that the child in utero is their patient.

My question is what makes an OB/GYN an OB/GYN? If a child weren’t involved, it would simply be GYN care but because a woman is pregnant with a child, the category of care shifts to OB. This means that in Gynecology you have one patient (with the possibility of a future second patient, of course). Obstetrics is the field of medicine that focuses on more than one patient as it provides care during pregnancy, childbirth, and what’s called the postpartum period.

As these specialized medical professionals contemplate who deserves their care, they must remember that the unborn child’s (temporary) location does not disqualify him or her from being a patient. The child’s perceived or diagnosed condition doesn’t disqualify him whether before, during or shortly after birth. 100% ProLife OB/GYNs play a very powerful role in ushering true equality in our society.

May more OB/GYNs awaken to see (and recognize in practice) every patient who comes through their doors—every mother and her preborn child—as precious lives who possess equal value and deserve equal care.
